Payne to meet US defence secretary

Defence Minister Marise Payne is set to have the first face-to-face meeting with a US counterpart from the Trump administration.

Senator Payne will meet with NATO defence ministers in Brussels to discuss the military campaign in Iraq and Syria against Islamic State extremists on Thursday (Brussels time).

So far IS have lost more than 60 per cent of their territory.

Senator Payne will meet with the new US Defence Secretary James Mattis to discuss defence and security issues.

She will also have talks with the new Iraqi Defence Minister Irfan al-Hayyali.

Australia has 780 defence personnel deployed to the Middle East carrying out air strikes, training Iraqi soldiers and carrying out special operations.
