Peats joins Eels rebuilding program

Rabbitohs utility Nathan Peats will join the Parramatta Eels on a three-year NRL deal.

Struggling Parramatta have continued their rebuilding by signing South Sydney utility forward Nathan Peats on a three-year deal from next NRL season.

Peats, who can play at hooker and lock, has been granted a release by the ladder-leading Rabbitohs, having earlier this year signed a new deal with them until the end of 2015.

He has found his opportunities limited this season due to the good form of Issac Luke.

While he has been involved in every Souths game in 2013, he has seen his playing minutes reduced as the Rabbitohs mount their challenge for a first premiership in 43 years.

The 22-year-old Peats is the fourth player signed by first-year Eels coach Ricky Stuart in his rebuilding program at the club.

English duo Gareth Hock and Lee Mossop agreed terms earlier this year along with Brisbane five-eighth Corey Norman.

Former NSW and Manly winger William Hopoate will also wear the blue and gold next year upon the completion of his two-year Mormon mission.

"Nathan is a wonderful talent and will bring a real competitiveness to our squad next season," Stuart said.

"He will play a massive part in what we are building towards here at the Eels and his signature ensures our recruitment and retention plans remain on track and in a good position to secure long-term success at the club."

Peats captained the Rabbitohs' under-20s side to a Grand Final in 2010 before making his NRL debut against Manly the following season and going on to represent the Indigenous All Stars in 2012 and 2013, as well as NSW City Origin in 2013.

Souths coach Michael Maguire said he was reluctant to see Peats leave, but acknowledged his desire for regular first-grade action.

"Peatsy is an important player in our squad and I'm sure he'll be putting his best foot forward to play a part in our first grade side for the rest of this season," Maguire said.

"He sees a greater opportunity to further his career at the Eels and we wish him the best of luck with the move next year."
