Many older Australians will be up to $20 dollars a fortnight better off when their pension rises today.

Regulated indexation will increase the maximum single rate by $29.20 dollars a fortnight and the combined couples rate by $44.

Families and Community Services Minister Jenny Macklin says when the rise is added to the budget increase, single pensioners on the maximum rate will be up to $100 a fortnight better off.

She says the increase in utilities allowance will also relieve some of the pain pensioners feel.
