People smuggler 'caught on camera'

Video footage has emerged of an alleged people smuggler from Indonesia, apparently admitting his role in a fatal boat sinking last year.

Asylum boats costing $12 million: Abbott

The opposition leader Tony Abbott says asylum seeker boats are costing the country $12 million.

ABC News claims the man filmed during a secretly recorded interview with another man posing as a broker is a "notorious people smuggler.". In the video, he appears to discuss smuggling routes and talks about alleged police involvement.

"I'm a former police officer. Don't ask which unit. But it means there is no problem, bro. No problem, no problem. The passengers will get through," he says.

"Listen here, those we read about in the media, those who get caught, it's because they didn't do much coordination."

"If they do have good coordination, they can get through to Christmas Island."

The man also allegedly admits his role in the tragic sinking of a boat off Christmas Island last year that left more than 50 people dead.
