People want plebiscite: Joyce

Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce expects both houses of parliament will support holding a plebiscite into gay marriage.

A plebiscite on gay marriage will go ahead as planned because that is what the people want, Deputy Prime Minister Barnaby Joyce says.

He says Australians overwhelmingly want a plebiscite and believes it will be supported in both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

"I think it would be a very brave person who says `I think I know better than the people who just elected me into this job'," Mr Joyce told Sky News on Sunday.
