One of Perth Zoo's young giraffes is settling into her new home in NSW after being driven across the country in a trailer - much to the surprise of those who glimpsed her along the way.
Twiga is one of eight giraffes born at Perth Zoo over the past 18 years under its regional breeding program and is the seventh calf for mother Misha, who was captured in the famous The Kiss photograph welcoming the first of her offspring, Makulu, into the world in 1995.
Born on January 16 last year, Twiga's name was the result of a public competition and means giraffe in Swahili.
She arrived safe and well at Taronga Western Plains Zoo in Dubbo on Friday, where she will add genetic variety to the resident herd.
For her previous keepers, it was a bittersweet farewell as they were sad to see her go but were happy in the knowledge she'd form new relationships outside her family.

"It's always a bit sad when animals leave but we're also pleased because as they get older, they need to set up their own groups and meet other, older giraffe," Perth Zoo spokeswoman Debbie Read told AAP.
"She was accompanied by three staff from the zoo on the trip over, so she was in good hands and travelled well.
"She was quite relaxed and we're very pleased with the way it went.
"We hope she settles in well and enjoys her new home."
On the journey, motorists and country town residents were surprised to see Twiga passing through.
"Even as she pulled out of the zoo here, there were a few necks turning," Ms Read laughed.
"A lot of people on the road noticed her during the trip.
"It's a bit unusual to see a giraffe while you're travelling. Something nice to be behind if you're sitting in traffic."
Perth Zoo is now home to four giraffes.
