Defending champions Townsville were the latest victims as a Perth Lynx team with an imposing American flavour continued to dominate the opening rounds of the WNBL.

Brittany McPhee and Asia Taylor have quickly formed a lethal combination out west and it was on show against the Fire in Townsville on Saturday, although they needed overtime to win a thriller 79-71.

McPhee, a guard for the Seattle Storm in the WNBA, scored 20 points and snaffled 10 rebounds, along with three blocks and two steals.

Indiana Fever small forward Taylor also enjoyed a stuffed stat line, including 18 points.

She was even better against her former Sydney Uni Flames team in Thursday's 78-62 win, mixing 13 points with 11 rebounds, five assists and three steals to complement the 22 points of captain Katie Ebzeny.

While the Lynx (5-1) have won five straight, the 2016/17-champion Flames (0-6) continue to sink.

The injury-hit Sydnersiders came close to a first win before succumbing 84-79 away to the second-placed Canberra Capitals (4-1) on Sunday.

Round four finishes on Monday with Melbourne Boomers hosting Bendigo Spirit, with the winners to claim outright third.

The Opals-studded Boomers (3-2) made it three in a row when dispatching local rivals Dandenong (2-3) 101-75, with Steph Talbot scoring 27.

Hosts Bendigo (3-2) saw off Adelaide (2-3) 70-52.

Australian and Townsville great Suzy Batkovic, who will retire at the end of the season, continues to top the league's scoring, averaging 23 points and 12 rebounds a game.
