Perth will bid to host next year's world junior athletics championships after the event was taken away from Russia by the IAAF.

The world junior athletics championships could come to Australia for just the second time ever next year, with Perth now a contender after the 2016 titles were stripped from Russia.

But there will be no Australian bid for the 2016 world race walking cup.

Both 2016 events were thrown open to new bidders after they were taken away from Russia as part of sanctions imposed by athletics' world governing body (IAAF) due to revelations regarding its systemic doping program.

The world juniors will take place in July - less than a month before the opening ceremony of the Rio Olympics.

The WA government assured Athletics Australia (AA) it was prepared to underwrite a bid for the biennial championships.

Perth will run against Bydogoszcz in Poland and a yet-to-be-confirmed Indian city for the championships that were due to take place in Kazan.

Sydney hosted the world juniors in 1996 - the only time it has taken place in Australia.

Melbourne and Canberra were touted as potential venues for the world race walking cup, which was originally awarded to the Russian city of Cheksobary, but neither decided to proceed with a bid.

"We'd obviously like to host the event given Australia's successful history in race walking," AA chief executive Phil Jones told AAP.

"But the challenge in 2016 is that you're asking the race walking community, and in particular the Europeans, to come to Australia in the middle of a significant period for them in preparation for the Olympics.

"Some of the advice from the race walking community was that it was going to impact on the fields quite significantly."

Australian Jared Tallent is likely to belatedly be awarded the 50km gold medal from the 2012 Olympics some time in the next few months.

He finished second to convicted Russian drug cheat Sergey Kirdyapkin, with the case currently before the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

The 2016 world race walking cup will be held in Rome, Kiev, Monterrey in Mexico or the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil.

"Considering the necessary speed of the process, that seven member federations from five continental areas have formally expressed an interest in bidding is clear evidence that the events have appeal," IAAF president Sebastian Coe said.

The new hosts will be chosen on January 7 in a vote by the IAAF Council.
