Perth's World Super 6 set for DJ music

The inaugural World Super 6 golf tournament in Perth was a success, but organisers are already thinking of ways to make it better.

Perth's revolutionary World Super 6 golf event is set to gain more of a party vibe next year as organisers attempt to make the tournament even more appealing to fans.

PGA of Australia chief commercial officer Steve Ayles dubbed last week's inaugural event as a success, saying the unique format was well received by the players.

The first three rounds were played as traditional stroke play, with only the top 24 players qualifying for Sunday's match play, where golfers went head-to-head in a series of six-hole, knockout battles.

If a match play round ended in a tie, the winner was decided over a 90m shootout hole.

Australian Brett Rumford won the inaugural event, with British Open winner Louis Oosthuizen bombing out in the match play quarterfinals.

Ayles said the early feedback he received on broadcast numbers was good.

And he wants to make the tournament even more fun next year, saying there are early plans to introduce a DJ to entertain fans by the 18th green.

The Phoenix Open in America has become renowned for its party atmosphere on the 16th hole, and Ayles has taken note of its success.

"I think having a DJ is something we'll consider very strongly," Ayles said.

"Everyone's loving the music.

"And the players have made it clear they are fine with music. They are fine with noise in the background.

"What they don't want is dead quiet, and then a sudden noise, particularly in their back-swing.

"But if there's music in the background, or people just chatting, that's fine, they don't mind that."

Ayles wants to grow the fan capacity around the 18th green, which is also part of the shootout hole.

And he will consider introducing a closest-to-the-pin aspect next year to decide any tied match plays that couldn't be split after a shootout hole.

Tournament organisers initially planned for the closest-to-the-pin rules to be in place for this year.

But they were forced to scrap the concept just days before the tournament started when it failed to gain approval in time from the Official Golf World Rankings board.

And it's not just players who will have the chance to earn a hefty payday next year at the $1.75 million tournament.

Ayles said organisers were considering introducing a million dollar hole-in-one competition for fans to take part in.

The tournament, which is tri-sanctioned by the European Tour, Asian Tour, and PGA Tour of Australasia, is locked in for Perth for at least two more years,
