Peru Six cleared over death of doorman

Six Australian who became suspects in the 2012 death of a hotel doorman in Peru have been cleared almost five years after the incident in Lima.

JANUARY 19, 2012

* Australians Hugh and Tom Hanlon, Jessica Vo, Sam Smith, Harrison Geier and Andrew Pilat staying in hotel in Lima, Peru

* Hotel doorman Lino Rodriguez Vilchez falls to his death

* Australians questioned at scene but free to leave

* Police treat death as suicide

JUNE 2012

* Deceased's brother persuades authorities to re-open case

JUNE 1, 2012

* Local Peru media label Aussies "killers"

JULY 2012

* Group hires Peruvian lawyers to defend them

JUNE 2013

* Judge names group as prime suspects and orders them to return to Peru

* Group applies to give evidence from Australia

JULY 2013

* Judge denies request, group appeals, awaits outcome

OCTOBER 2013

* Judges in Lima grant appeal allowing the six to give statements from Australia

AUGUST 2016

* Peru Six advised they won't be prosecuted but remain tight-lipped in case Mr Rodriguez's family appeals

SEPTEMBER 20, 2016

* Group notified by lawyers and the Australian government no appeal has been submitted

OCTOBER 8, 2016

* The Australians go public after receiving final advice in writing there's been no appeal by family

* They issue statement on Facebook: "Today, we feel overwhelming relief as we close this chapter of our lives and finally move on."
