Peruvian club fined for racist fan chants

After supporters of Peruvian club Real Garcilaso racially abused Brazilian player Tinga the club was fined by South America's governing football body.

Peruvian club Real Garcilaso has been fined $US12,000 ($A13,175) following an incident last month in which club supporters racially abused black Brazilian player Tinga of club Cruzeiro in a Copa Libertadores match.

CONMEBOL, the governing body of South American football, announced the fine on Monday and warned the club could face stiffer penalties including forcing it to play in an empty home stadium if similar incidents occur.

Tinga was taunted with monkey chants during the game, won 2-1 by Real Garcilaso.

Racist behaviour is a long-standing problem at matches in Europe, particularly in eastern and southern Europe.

World governing body FIFA has sponsored anti-racism campaigns that have had modest success. It is less of a problem in Latin America, where hooligan violence is the main menace.
