Petition asks for Tongan PM's impeachment

A petition is set to be handed over to Tonga's King calling for the impeachment of seven government ministers, including the Prime Minister

A petition calling for the impeachment of Tonga's Prime Minister and several cabinet ministers is set to be handed to the King this week, according to reports.

The document, organised by Public Service Association Secretary-General Mele 'Amanaki - a candidate in the last two general elections - and five others was posted online on Friday.

It alleges Prime Minister 'Akilisi Pohiva and six cabinet ministers have misused their power and taxpayer money, and also calls for the parliament to postpone its debate of the 2018-19 budget for an audit.

It will be turned over to the King and Parliament on Friday, Matangi Tonga reports.

Mr Pohiva has been prime minister since 2014 and was re-elected in November after King Tupou VI dissolved Tonga's parliament amid concerns about the government's performance.
