A lead figure in the movement to stop Australia becoming a republic has launched a petition for Malcolm Turnbull to resign and be replaced by Tony Abbott.

Legal academic David Flint, who is being supported by NSW MP Fred Nile, says Mr Abbott "has demonstrated that he is the coalition's and indeed the Parliament's best campaigner and that the policy he is enunciating reflects the overwhelming wishes of the people".

The petition calls for a cut in immigration, assimilation of new migrants, cheaper electricity and a "total prohibition on the return of any one jihadist".
