Philanthropy may run in his family's blood but for Sidney Hordern Myer, giving back to the community is simply a case of doing something he enjoys.
Mr Myer's grandfather, Myer retail chain founder Sidney Myer, was one of Australia's best-known philanthropists and the next generations of his family have continued that tradition.
Mr Myer, for one, devotes his time to a number of community endeavours on top of his "day job" as CEO of the Yulgilbar Group of Companies, which manages investment portfolios and agricultural interests, including breeding Santa Gertrudis cattle and quarter horses.
The Melbourne resident has been appointed a Member (AM) of the Order of Australia in recognition of his service to the community through a range of philanthropic, rural development and zoological organisations.
It was an unexpected honour, Mr Myer said, adding that it was a privilege to be recognised among very distinguished company this year.

He said the most important thing was "I enjoy what I do". "I find it fulfilling and rewarding," he said.
"Sure you can't forget the family legacy and a family history of engagement with the community but I think my prime drivers are to be supportive and interested around the things that I enjoy and I believe in."
Mr Myer is a director of The Myer Foundation and the Myer Family Company, and a trustee of the Sidney Myer Estate.
It was a general interest in wildlife and conservation, and the opportunity to support an important Melbourne icon, that led to his involvement with Zoos Victoria, where he has served on a number of committees.
In the rural development space, Mr Myer was founding director of the Foundation for Rural and Regional Renewal, which funds projects across Australia.
He's ended up as CEO of Yulgilbar, after a life-long involvement with its farming activities.
Another long-held personal passion is furthering Australia's links with Asia, part of which is achieved through his role as chairman of Asialink at the University of Melbourne.
