Lana Slezic is the photographer who took the provocative image of a woman wearing a full-length blue burqa and pointing a gun.
She has told ABC she is appalled this portrait of Afghanistan's first female police officer - Malalai Kakar - has been used by Jacqui Lambie in her campaign to ban the Islamic dress in Australia.
Senator Lambie, from the Palmer United Party, shared a post from far right group 'Britain First' on her facebook page with the image and text that says: 'For security reasons it's now time to ban the burqa'.
"To have this image used in this way really is such an insult to Malalai – she would be turning in her grave and I am also deeply insulted by the use of the image in this way," Ms Slezic told ABC.
Malalai Kakar, mother of six, was shot by Taliban gunmen in her car at her home, in 2008.
Ms Slezic says she took the portrait photograph to demonstrate the daily life and difficulties Malalai Kakar faced as she worked to help tackle domestic violence and rape.
"In her office she always wore a uniform and she was armed, but when she left her office, as soon as she left the police station she was in a burqa," she said.
A spokesperson for Senator Lambie has told ABC use of the image will be reviewed, but the Senator is sticking to the message.
The post remains on the Senator's facebook page.
