Pickering not replaced on The Project

Guest panellists will fill the space left by comedian Charlie Pickering when he departs The Project next month.

Presenter Carrie Bickmore and comedian Peter Helliar will carry Network Ten's news talk show The Project after Charlie Pickering quit on Wednesday.

Pickering is the second panellist to resign in a matter of months after Dave Hughes announced his departure in December.

Helliar replaced Hughes but Ten has confirmed that there will not be a permanent third host of the evening show.

Instead, the guests panellists, such as Andrew Rochford, Steve Price, Todd Sampson and Steve Vizard, will appear more frequently to cover for Pickering's departure.

Pickering will leave The Project after almost five years behind the desk.

He said he made his decision late last year and his last appearance will be Monday, April 7 which is just three months shy of The Project's fifth anniversary.

"As a stand-up comedian I have never planned to do one thing for five years, let alone five days a week," Pickering said in a statement.

"At the end of last year it was clear to me that I needed to find new challenges."

* The Project screens weeknights at 6.30pm on the Ten Network
