Pipeline Masters hit by more delay

Small swell has once again delayed the start of round three at the season-ending men's World Surf League event at Pipeline in Hawaii.

Another lay day has been called at the season-ending men's World Surf League event in Hawaii.

Small surf, reaching no more than a metre, at the famed break of Pipeline on Oahu's north shore on Sunday (Monday AEDT) caused organisers to once again delay the start of the sudden-death round three at the iconic event which will decide this year's world title.

"Small surf again today but were looking at some good swell coming this week," WSL Commissioner Kieren Perrow said.

"We'll be back tomorrow to make another assessment, but it's looking like the swell will begin to fill in on Tuesday."

Australia's Mick Fanning, top of the standings, is shooting for his fourth world crown, but will need to stave off a number of Brazilian challengers: Filipe Toledo, Adriano De Souza and Gabriel Medina.

Medina will be first in the water when competition commences against South Africa's Jordy Smith while Fanning faces 32-year-old Hawaiian Jamie O'Brien, who grew up near Banzai Pipeline and won the Masters in 2004.
