Andrew McCutchen's first career grand slam has taken the Pittsburgh Pirates to a 10-1 Major Baseball League (MLB) win over the Baltimore Orioles.
Batting with the bases loaded and two outs in the second inning, McCutchen sent a fastball from Kevin Gausman soaring 412 feet into the centre-field seats.
He later added a three-run homer to his tally and became the first Pirates' player since 2004 to drive in eight runs in one game.
McCutchen's feat was almost matched by JD Martinez, who hit a grand slam and drove in six runs in the Arizona Diamondbacks' 11-4 win against the San Francisco Giants.
The Houston Astros triumphed over the Texas Rangers 14-3 to ensure at least second place in the American League.
With five matches remaining, the Astros are one game behind the first-placed Cleveland Indians, beaten 8-6 by the Minnesota Twins.
The Boston Red Sox's lead in the American League East shrank to three games after being beaten 9-4 by the Toronto Blue Jays.
Red Sox star Chris Sale gave up a season-high four homers, including a pair to Josh Donaldson, after allowing just 11 hits, two walks and no runs over his side's previous three encounters with Toronto.
The Los Angeles Angels kept their flickering playoff hopes alive with a 9-3 win over the Chicago White Sox. They remain five games behind the Twins for the second American League wildcard spot.
The Milwaukee Brewers held off the Cincinnati Reds 7-6, the St Louis Cardinals edged the Chicago Cubs 8-7 and the Colorado Rockies shut out the Miami Marlins 6-0.
The New York Yankees beat the Tampa Bay Rays 6-1, the Philadelphia Phillies triumphed over the Washington Nationals 4-1 and the Kansas City Royals won 2-1 against the Detroit Tigers.
The LA Dodgers downed the San Diego Padres 9-2, the New York Mets saw off the Atlanta Braves 4-3 and the Seattle Mariners won 6-3 against the Oakland Athletics.
