Plan to tighten MP entitlements in WA

The WA government has proposed trimming entitlements for members of parliament and former premiers.

West Australian MPs will no longer travel for free on trains while premiers will need to clock up two years in the job before pocketing their entitlements.

Under the changes proposed by the state government, the travel entitlements of MPs will also need approval.

Premier Colin Barnett has described the current system as outdated, saying "time has marched on".

He said the changes should apply at the beginning of the next term of government.

SOME OF THE PROPOSED CHANGES:

* Former premiers get entitlements after serving two years, up from one year

* Travel entitlements restricted to official business and need approval by the Director General of the Department of Premier and Cabinet

* Car and driver provisions tightened, with DPC Director General to approve on a case-by-case basis

* Secretarial allowance for six months replaces an office and a full-time staff member for up to 12 months
