Plane crash victim found in Vic lake

A woman's body has been recovered after a light plane crashed into a lake in regional Victoria, but the pilot survived.

A woman's body has been pulled from the water after an ultralight plane crashed into a Victorian lake.

The ultra-light fixed wing plane crashed at Lake Eildon near Mountain Bay, in the state's Alpine region about 12.20pm on Saturday, police said.

The pilot, in his 40s, survived the crash and was picked up up by a fishing boat but his female passenger did not survive.

A witness said the pilot was flying close to the water before the fatal crash.

"He was just flying around, you know about 20m off the water and he appeared, he was going up and down and he just come down. It hit the water and bloody somersaulted," fisherman Sid Knight told Seven News.

The plane sank "like a rock" and went straight down, he said.

The Civil Aviation Safety Authority and the Australian Transport Safety Bureau have been told about the crash.

Authorities will resume the search for the plane on Sunday.
