A plane has skidded into a snowbank in freezing conditions at New York's John F Kennedy Airport, which temporarily ceased operations because of the icy conditions.

The airport was closed at 8.32am (0032 AEDT) on Sunday after a Delta Airlines jet from Toronto slid into snow on a taxiway, officials say.

There were no injuries to the 35 people on board, according to ABC News.

The airport, which handles international and domestic flights and is one of the largest in the US, reopened shortly before 11am.

Many flights were delayed by nearly two hours while around 15 flights were cancelled, according to the air traffic monitoring website flightaware.com.
