Plans to remove toxic Melbourne stockpile

Industrial solvents are among up to 1.5 million litres of toxic chemicals being removed from Melbourne warehouses in a delicate operation.

Authorities expect to start dismantling a stockpile of toxic chemicals, found hidden in Melbourne warehouses, by the end of the month.

WorkSafe Victoria on Wednesday confirmed there is up to 1.5 million litres of hazardous liquids - including industrial solvents - stored in bulk containers and drums at eight sites in Epping and Campbellfield.

The collection of chemicals was discovered in late December and sparked an urgent response from agencies, highlighting the potential threat if there was a leak.

"Specialist contractors are being engaged and it is anticipated removal work will begin before the end of January," WorkSafe said in a statement.

Air monitoring continues and each site is under 24-hour guard.

"Fire prevention measures have been increased in preparation for the removal work."

Among the chemicals identified is methyl ethyl ketone, used in industrial solvents. There have also been water-based automotive and house paints, aerosol cans and LPG gas cylinders found at some of the sites.

Investigations are continuing into how and why the chemicals were stockpiled.
