There are renewed calls for the federal Attorney General not to change the federal racial vilification laws.

George Brandis is expected to change provisions of the federal laws which make it a criminal act to use language that insults, offends or humiliates on the basis of race or ethnicity.

At least 150 organisations from across Australia, including the Human Rights Law Centre and Oxfam Australia have jointly delivered a letter to Senator Brandis.

The letter highlights the role that the Racial Discrimination Act has played in combating racial hatred and protecting individuals and groups against discrimination and hate speech.
