Labor frontbencher Tony Burke has pleaded to fellow MPs to stop attacking Muslim community allies vital in countering terrorism.
Mr Burke said Resources Minister Josh Frydenberg's comments on the Grand Mufti were "needlessly regressive" and "self-defeating", adding other coalition MPs who've joined such statements risked reigniting sectarian debates.
"It has been devastating to see members of this place in the last few days make statements which are clearly calculated to cause division," he told parliament on Monday.
