Western Australia's historically low share of the GST will loom large in talks between Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull and the state's premier.

The Liberal leaders are meeting in Perth on Wednesday, after Colin Barnett reiterated concerns WA was being "ripped off".

Mr Turnbull said he was aware the issue was a big one in the state, and reminded reporters WA recently received a near-$500 million compensatory payment from the federal government.

"We understand the consequences of the mining boom that obviously brought very big mining royalties to Western Australia had, because of the formula, an impact on its share of the GST," Mr Turnbull said.

"I look forward to discussing that with Colin today and of course with the other premiers on Friday."
