PM breached defence convention: ADA

The Australia Defence Association says breaches of a convention designed to keep the defence force apolitical have become too common.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull breached a longstanding convention designed to keep the defence force apolitical by campaigning on a navy base, the Australia Defence Association says.

ADA executive director Neil James said abuses of this convention had become so common this election campaign that the Electoral Act needed to be amended to spell out what was and wasn't acceptable.

"Both parties are now disobeying the convention so often that even the prime minister yesterday electioneered on a defence force base," he told Sky News.
