Malcolm Turnbull insists the next federal election will be held next year, despite what many see as a pre-election budget.
When asked by various media on Wednesday morning whether he'd go to the polls earlier, the prime minister said the government would "absolutely" run its full term to an election in the first half of 2019.
"You should be planning your election coverage for next year," he said.
Treasurer Scott Morrison - who will introduce legislation to cut personal income tax to parliament on Wednesday morning - said his third budget wasn't about the election but about making people's lives easier.
"It's about them. Not about me. It's not about the prime minister. It's not about you," Mr Morrison told the Nine Network.
"It's actually about Australians who are working hard and they should get the relief from their hard earned work."
But Opposition Leader Bill Shorten wasn't buying it, and said he "can't wait for an election".
"You and I know if Mr Turnbull thought he could win an election this Saturday he'd race off," he told
"We're ready for one whenever it's called."
