Malcolm Turnbull has defended subsidising renewable energy companies, warning of mass disruption if the policy was dumped.

In light of debate around government assistance for struggling dairy farmers, 2GB broadcaster Alan Jones on Wednesday queried the prime minister about federal money for wind-turbine companies.

"We've got to stick with it," Mr Turnbull said of the renewable energy target.
