Malcolm Turnbull has defended the use of family trusts and says his government has no plans to make changes.

The prime minister was responding to figures from the Taxation Office, obtained by Fairfax Media, which show that in 2014-15 there were almost 643,000 discretionary trusts - which include family trusts.

That's almost twice the number of 20 years ago.

"Trusts are a very legitimate form of business structure. They're very widely used in small businesses," Mr Turnbull told 3AW on Friday, revealing he's never had one of his own.
