PM-elect Abbott 'getting down to business'

Prime minister-elect Tony Abbott is heading to his Sydney office for briefings from senior public servants.

Prime minister-elect Tony Abbott is "getting down to business" in Sydney where he will be briefed by Australia's top public servants.

"This is essentially a working day," Mr Abbott told reporters outside his northern Sydney home on Sunday, the morning after claiming an emphatic election victory.

"I'll be in the office now for the rest of the day getting briefings from senior public servants."

Mr Abbott becomes the country's 28th prime minister after a decisive swing toward the coalition in Saturday's poll.

He says he will work on building a better future for Australia in the months and years ahead.

"People expect that the day after an election, an incoming government will be getting down to business and that's what I'll be doing today," he said.

Earlier, a lycra-clad Mr Abbott started the day bike riding near his Forestville home.

"It was a very big night but this is just the start of another normal day and there's going to be a fair bit of solid work this morning," he told reporters before setting off for his ride.

Mr Abbott's wife Margie was up early too, saying she was "feeling fine".

"Life goes on and I've been out to get some early morning groceries and hopefully the day will be as normal as possible," she said.

A triumphant Mr Abbott declared Australia under new management and open for business in his victory speech on Saturday night, pledging to create a competent, trustworthy government.
