Malcolm Turnbull has celebrated the achievements of women in the defence force as he marked International Women's Day.

The prime minister highlighted the story of Major General Simone Wilkie, the first female commander of operations in Afghanistan, who entered the army at a time when women weren't allowed to do basic guard duty at Sydney's Victoria Barracks.

"As a role model for young women coming up through the ranks, she is a great example of the motto: if you can't see it, you can't be it," Mr Turnbull told a breakfast at the Australian Defence Force Academy in Canberra on Wednesday.
