Prime Minister Julia Gillard has met with the Governor-General in her Yarralumla residence in Canberra to ask permission to call a federal election in late August.

Ms Gillard arrived in Canberra early this morning, flying in from her Victorian electorate of Lalor.

The Prime Minister's white Statesmen, adorned with the Australian flag, arrived at Government House around 10.40am.

She spent nearly half an hour with Ms Bryce, before returning to Parliament House.

Ms Gillard is expected to give a press conference at midday, where she will confirm the date of the poll.
