Australia stands ready to deploy "extra resources" in the battle against Islamic State in Syria and Iraq, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull says.

"If there is a call on us to provide further resources or resources in a different way, we will consider that constructively," he told parliament on Thursday.

The government would like other like-minded countries to make a larger contribution to the campaign.

Mr Turnbull said the support given to his government in the fight against Islamic State was in stark contrast to that in the UK.

"Even as we speak, (British) Prime Minister David Cameron in the UK (is) seeking to secure the support of the House of Commons to enable his air force to operate against targets in Syria," he said.
