Fresh from a paddle with an American billionaire and a fortnight out from his 63rd birthday, Malcolm Turnbull says he's feeling good and fighting fit.

The prime minister spent Friday morning kayaking on Sydney Harbour with GoPro founder Nick Woodman.

The 42-year-old from California came up with the idea of an action video camera while on a surfing trip to Australia.

"It's the first time he's been back in Australia for 15 years," Mr Turnbull said in an interview with a Brisbane's Nova 106.9, before explaining the story behind Mr Woodman's "gigantic business".

"It was great fun. It's always good to be out on the water."

Appearing later on the Seven Network's The Morning Show, Mr Turnbull revealed he took an on-water selfie with the businessman and a woman from a paddling group who passed by.

Mr Turnbull said he was "feeling good, fighting fit" ahead of his birthday on October 24.

With parliament sitting that day, he will be in Canberra, but hopes to have a quiet, romantic dinner with wife Lucy.

"In busy lives - and we all have them - finding those precious moments when you are together is the best present of all."
