PM pledges funds for school trade centres

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd has promised to establish 137 trade training centres for high school students across Australia.

Federal Labor has pledged $210 million to establish trade training centres for students to learn skills such as carpentry and joinery.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd made the announcement at a Cairns high school on Wednesday.

Mr Rudd says thousands of students in 225 schools across Australia will benefit from new training opportunities in 137 new centres.

The investment will give all Australian students an opportunity to secure high-skill, high-wage jobs beyond the China mining investment boom, he says.

The trade training centres are targeted at Year 12 students.
