Malcolm Turnbull has paid tribute to indigenous culture and migrants while hosting Australian of the Year award nominees at The Lodge in Canberra.

"We are 65,000 years old ... our First Australians embody the oldest, longest, continuous human civilisation," the prime minister said on Thursday.

"And yet, we are as new as the little baby in the arms of her migrant mother, who will be getting her citizenship certificate tomorrow."
