Malcolm Turnbull heads into Sunday's Liberal Party campaign launch with the economy and stability firmly front and centre.

In his only campaign event on Saturday, he held a joint press conference with Treasurer Scott Morrison focused only on the impact Britain's vote to leave the European Union would have on Australia.

A question on same-sex marriage - which he is facing pressure on - was brushed aside.

He made a strong push for voters to back the coalition as the better economic managers and warned against voting for Labor, the Greens or the independents.

"The only vote on Saturday that will ensure a stable majority government, a stable major coalition government, is a vote for the Liberal and National parties," he said.

"Now more than ever Australia needs a stable, strong economic plan."

He dismissed Labor leader Bill Shorten's attack on him - Mr Shorten had described Mr Turnbull as "a weak man beholden to the right wing of his party" who would fail to deliver a stable and united government.

"If Mr Shorten wants to engage in personal attacks then he can do so but I won't be trading them with him."

While Mr Turnbull wouldn't address the same-sex marriage issue, thousands of marriage equality supporters rallied around the country.

Speakers at the Brisbane event criticised the non-binding plebiscite, which the Liberals have promised to hold if they win the election, as a "slap in the face".

Gay Labor candidate for Brisbane Pat O'Neill said July 2 was the opportunity to give the LGBT community a "voice at the ballot box".

On Sunday, Mr Turnbull will stand in front of the party faithful in the marginal Liberal seat of Reid in inner-western Sydney to launch the Liberals' campaign.

Reid is one of six marginal seats which fresh polling shows the Liberals could retain in NSW - including Dobell on the Central Coast, plus the western Sydney seats of Banks, Gilmore and Lindsay.

Former Liberal prime ministers John Howard and Tony Abbott will be at the campaign launch, but one-time leader John Hewson won't be.

He'll be addressing a climate change rally in Mr Turnbull's seat of Wentworth at the same time as the campaign launch.
