PM reform still has to pass cabinet: Labor

Labor MP Matt Thistlethwaite says Malcolm Turnbull's reform plans reflect similar work done by the ALP while in government.

Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is presenting himself as the reformer, but his plans still have to get the support of his cabinet, Labor MP Matt Thistlethwaite says.

Mr Turnbull has revealed ideas for greater borrowing to fund public transport, the creation of a sovereign wealth fund and union reform.

But Labor had made significant reforms on trade unions and invested in public transport when it was in government, Mr Thistlethwaite told Sky News on Saturday.

"Bill Shorten and Chris Bowen have shown great leadership, great nous looking at (budget sustainability)," he said.

"It's good to see that the prime minister's finally seen that this leadership is worthwhile, it's another question about whether or not he can convince the others in his cabinet like Scott Morrison, and get these sort of changes through the party room."
