Prime Minister Scott Morrison will visit drought-stricken areas of regional Queensland in his first official trip in the top job this week.
The drought is a main priority for his new government and Mr Morrison will arrive in the state on Monday morning.
"I do know people are hurting in the country, and they have been hurting terribly," Mr Morrison said.
Farmers will soon feel some relief after drought support legislation cleared parliament last week, providing eligible couples with up to $12,000 and individuals $7200 in two payments on September 1 and March 1.
The cash injection is a supplement to the Farm Household Allowance, a payment worth about $16,000 a year which farmers can access for a limit of four years.
Nationals MP Darren Chester has applauded the prime minister's decision to visit drought-stricken Queensland and says local councils should be given more resources so workers don't pack up and leave.
Head of the National Farmer's Federation Fiona Simson says the tour will ensure the new prime minister will see first-hand how communities and farmers are struggling.
"At the moment there are people who have run out of rainwater," she said.
"We are struggling with that. We certainly need to make sure that basic human needs and basic animal welfare needs are always at the top of the list."
The NSW government is now offering to sell environmental water to drought-stricken farmers with the money raised to be held in a trust for relief projects.
