PM, Shorten condemn Afghan bomb blast

The prime minister and opposition leader have expressed Australia's condolences to Afghanistan following the deadly bomb blast in Kabul.

Australia's political leaders have condemned the deadly bomb attack in Kabul.

At least 89 people died and 350 were injured in the explosion near the German embassy on Wednesday.

"This latest attack follows a fortnight where we have seen the evil scourge of Islamist terrorism continue to exact its murderous campaign against civilians around the world," Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull told parliament on Thursday.

Mr Turnbull has written to Afghan president Ashraf Ghani expressing Australia's sympathies and restating Australia's resolve to help the country fight Islamist terrorism.

The attack took place on a road less than a kilometre from the Australian embassy, an area the prime minister visited five weeks ago to pay tribute to Australian defence force personnel.

No Australians were injured in the blast.

Afghanistan ambassador to Australia Wahidullah Waissi was present on the floor of parliament for the speech.

Labor leader Bill Shorten said the people of Afghanistan had his party's "unwavering support".

"At the beginning of this most holy time in the Islamic faith (Ramadan), this act of terror is a crime against Islam, and a crime against humanity," he said.
