PM spruiks budget infrastructure spend

The prime minister has travelled north west of Sydney to sell his government's $200 million budget promise to build a third crossing over the Hawkesbury River.

While the nation waits for a date for the federal election to be called, the prime minister is using his time travelling the regions to sell his government's budget.

Scott Morrison on Sunday visited Richmond north west of Sydney to spruik the coalition's $200 million budget pledge to build a third crossing of the Hawkesbury River at North Richmond.

The funds will help ease congestion in the Macquarie electorate and will make a "big difference" to western Sydney residents, Mr Morrison said.

"A key part of ensuring we manage population growth into the future is that we invest in the infrastructure that relieves the pressure on our cities," he told reporters on Sunday.

The prime minister was joined by Liberal candidate for Macquarie, Sarah Richards, who described the funds as a "huge win".

"It means less congestion ... more time spent at home with friends and family instead of being stuck in traffic," Ms Richards said alongside the prime minister.

It was believed Mr Morrison would call the election on Sunday but the Liberal leader decided against visiting the governor-general, effectively ruling out May 11 as the election date.

Instead he's buying himself more time to spruik the budget.

"What we are doing is pursuing the government's program of explaining to Australians what the budget means," Mr Morrison said.

Australian voters now aren't expected to go to the polls until at least May 18.
