Malcolm Turnbull says he will draw upon the same values President Barack Obama spoke of during his last address to the United Nation's general assembly when he gets his turn.

The prime minister will deliver his first major speech to the international gathering on Thursday morning AEST.

When asked whether his message will be similar to that of President Obama's, Mr Turnbull told reporters in New York: "The answer is yes - the values of open markets, free trade, liberal democracy, rule of law - these are ones Australia and the United States absolutely share".
