PM to head across the ditch for NZ talks

New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English has announced Malcolm Turnbull will make an official visit to Queenstown on Friday.

Malcolm Turnbull is headed across the ditch on Friday with two of his senior colleagues.

New Zealand Prime Minister Bill English broke the news on Monday releasing a statement about the Trans-Tasman meeting in Queenstown.

Mr Turnbull will fly into the resort town for his first official meeting with his new counterpart, as part of the annual Australia-New Zealand leaders meeting.

While Mr Turnbull's office is yet to publicly release details of the trip, Mr English's statement says the prime minister will be accompanied by Treasurer Scott Morrison and Industry Minister Arthur Sinodinos.

They will meet with NZ Finance Minister Steven Joyce and Economic Development Minister Simon Bridges.

The flying visit will include a meeting with business leaders from both countries, with the leaders to lay a wreath at the Arrowtown War Memorial.

"This visit will be a good opportunity to discuss global economic trends and our shared interest in advancing the trade agenda in the Asia-Pacific," Mr English said in the statement.

"We will also review progress towards our Trans-Tasman economic integration ambitions.

"We will continue discussions on the situation of New Zealanders in Australia, particularly following Prime Minister Turnbull's welcome announcement in 2016 of a pathway to citizenship.''

Mr Turnbull hosted Mr English's predecessor John Key in Sydney this time last year.
