Water police will join the search for a man missing after trying to move his boat before Cyclone Yasi hit the north Queensland coast.

Police say the man wanted to move his boat but hasn't been heard of since after failing to make contact with associates.

Water police will arrive in the area today after their boats were moved to sheltered moorings before Yasi arrived.

It's also hoped that aerial checks of boats on the foreshore may provide a clue.

ABC Radio reported that another man was also missing.

One man was killed after inhaling fumes from a generator during the blackout inflicted by Yasi.

PM arrives

Prime Minister Julia Gillard, meanwhile, has arrived in Townsville to inspect damage inflicted by Cyclone Yasi.

Her entourage arrived in the north Queensland city on Thursday night.

"I would prefer that my visit to Queensland was for other purposes but we're here because nature's been continuing to throw challenges to Queensland," Ms Gillard told reporters in Townsville.

Police and defence officials have given Ms Gillard a briefing, a spokeswoman for Ms Gillard said.

She is expected on Friday morning to inspect areas of Townsville that were battered by Cyclone Yasi before visiting other affected areas of north Queensland.

Federal Attorney-General Robert McClelland is accompanying Ms Gillard in his capacity as emergency management chief.
