PM to resume campaign mode

The prime minister is expected to return to the hustings after attempting to put politics to the side during a visit to flood-hit Tasmania.

Malcolm Turnbull is set to resume normal election campaign mode a day after sidelining politics for a tour of flood-ravaged Tasmania.

The prime minister is expected to deliver a lunch address at the Menzies Research Centre, a right-leaning think tank on Friday, before hitting the hustings interstate.

Mr Turnbull on Thursday visited the Liberal marginal seats of Bass and Braddon in northern Tasmania to announce flood assistance to affected residents, businesses, farms and community groups.

He met with struggling dairy farmers at a meeting the media were excluded from, but his office later posted its own highly produced video package on social media.

Mr Turnbull also inspected Launceston's new flood levee that had proved a saviour for the regional city as the Tamar River continues to surge.

He declined to answer any reporters' questions about domestic politics during the Tasmania trip.

This contrasted with his behaviour earlier this week, during a press conference in the flood-hit NSW town of Picton where Mr Turnbull was happy to field questions on all topics.

Overnight Mr Turnbull addressed a US Studies Centre 10th anniversary soiree in Sydney alongside former prime minister John Howard.
