Malcolm Turnbull's disapproval rating has risen to its highest level since becoming prime minister.

The latest Essential poll, released on Tuesday, puts Mr Turnbull's personal disapproval rating at 48 per cent, while his approval rating is 37 per cent.

The poll gives Labor a 53-47 per cent two-party preferred lead over the coalition.
