Trade and innovation are expected to dominate the agenda when Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull meets the Chinese president.
Mr Turnbull will kick off day two of his whirlwind China visit on Friday with a science announcement at the Beijing Ancient Observatory.
He'll also be appearing at an event with Chinese star actress Fan Bing Bing before meeting with President Xi Jinping.
Mr Turnbull touched down in China on Thursday, making several sporting, tourism and innovation announcements aimed at strengthening Australia's trade ties with China.
It's the first visit by an Australian prime minster to China since the China/Australia free-trade agreement came into effect in December.
The visit comes amid heightened tensions over the South China Sea and concerns about the impact of cheap imported steel on Australia's steel industry.
Mr Turnbull has refused to confirm whether he will raise the hot-button issues with China during his visit.
However, he did use a major speech on Thursday to urge the super power to stay the course on its "long journey" toward open markets and the rule of law.
