Labor is preparing to release what safeguards it wants included in the China free trade agreement, as it urges Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull to take a new approach.

The opposition says it supports the deal but has concerns about the impact on local jobs.

It believes with the complementary safeguards they can be resolved.

Trade Minister Andrew Robb is open to clarifying things, however insists the deal won't be altered.

Debate on the agreement will resume in parliament on Tuesday.
