The Department of Foreign Affairs has warned Australians travelling overseas of the very high threat of terrorist attacks against Western targets.

In an interview with SBS, Prime Minister Julia Gillard made clear travelling Australians should be cautious.

"There might be demonstrations in some part of the world decrying the death of Bin Laden. We are telling Australian just don't go and get swept up in that," she told SBS.

"For Australians overseas we are providing very clear advice: not to get involved in any mass demonstration that there might be.

"We are asking people to register with tthe Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade if they are going to are going to travel".

DFAT earlier today warned particularly Australians travelling to Pakistan.

"There is a very high threat of terrorist attack against places in Pakistan that are frequented by Australians and other Westerners," an updated travel advisory said.

Possible targets ranged from the Australian embassy through to hotels, restaurants and universities, DFAT said.

"These attacks could include Western or Australian interests and occur at anytime, anywhere in Pakistan," the advisory states.

However, the federal government has not upgraded the threat level in Australia.

"In Australia we haven't moved out terrorism alert system to a higher level, as the result of the death of Bin Laden," the PM told SBS.
