Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has warned Chinese Premier Li Keqiang he risks starting a war if he continues on the path he has set in the South China Sea.

China's territorial claims were a dominant topic at the East Asia Summit in Malaysia on Sunday.

Mr Turnbull used historical examples to make his case, drawing on lessons learnt from the ancient Greek Peloponnesian War of almost 2500 years ago to warn the premier not to "fall into a Thucydides trap", the Australian reported.
